If you design your own cover please supply an open file so we can make fine adjustments when the final spine size of the book has been determined. This is often done as a last job before your proof copy is produced. See more information on spine sizes

The width of the spine of a book will vary according to the weight of paper used and the number of pages in your publication, so adjustment of the spine width is sometimes necessary to achieve that perfect fit.

Design Considerations

With books that have a small number of pages which will be perfect bound, it is difficult to align wording on the spine with the mechanics of the perfect binding machine. Therefore titles on the spine should be avoided on books which will be less than about 8mm in width. Spine Titles on narrow books are possible but more wastage in the binding process is incurred which affect the overall cost.

Dust Jacket Considerations

Dust jackets with flaps which fold inside the book covers present problems to digital printing equipment due to the large paper sheets sizes which need to be used for printing. Digital presses are not designed to feed large sheets so some size dust jackets need to be offset printed. This presents major cost increases as offset technology is expensive for small runs of books. This should be taken into account when choosing the initial page size and orientation of your book if a dust jacket is required. The same applies for cover on books that are printed in landscape orientation if they are larger than A5
